How to upload photographs for the website
First, send email to the webmaster
(webmaster@rangerfootballfans.org),
asking for the ftp User name and password. Once you have those two items,
you can proceed with the following instructions.
Preparing the Photos
- They should be in jpg format.
- Preferably, they should have a resolution of no more than 1024 pixels in
either direction.
- Preferably, they should all be in a single folder (directory), and you
should upload the entire folder.
-
Preferably, the folder's name should be fairly short, but should include a brief
indication of the event, and photographer's name. (E.g.,
Varsity_vs_Kempner_Tolle)
-
Ideally (but this is certainly not required), they should be in the form of a
Picasa export. The webmaster will be glad to provide instructions for generating a
Picasa export, if you want to try that.
You need ftp client software
You can use any ftp client software. I know of two possibilities: Filezilla
Client and Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). For reasons I do not yet understand, the
Filezilla Client works much more reliably than IE8.
Both Filezilla Client and IE8 can be downloaded and installed for free. To do
so, click on the Forms and Downloads tab at the top this page:
http://www.rangerfootballfans.org/, and select the software that
you wish to download.
The preferred method to upload photos, using Filezilla Client:
-
Run Filezilla Client.
-
Fill in the boxes near the top of its window for Host
(ftp://web50.opentransfer.com), Username, and Password. (Note: they are
case-sensitive.)
-
It should connect to the website. If it fails, try it again, until it connects.
-
Using the Local site area in the window (on the left, near the top), browse to
the folder on your computer that you want to upload.
-
Drag that folder to the Remote site (on the right, near the top).
-
Filezilla will upload the files, and will give you a pretty good status
indication of how fast the transfer is proceeding.
-
This process gets the files up to the website, but does not link them in. The
webmaster will do that.
-
Send email to
webmaster@rangerfootballfans.org to notify the webmaster that the files are
there.
The alternative, currently flaky method, to upload photos, using IE8:
- Type or paste this into the address bar of IE8:
ftp://web50.opentransfer.com
- Hit the Enter key, or click on the right arrow near the address bar.
- If it fails, click on the refresh button near the address bar,
repeatedly if necessary, until it pops up a dialog box.
- In the dialog box, enter the user name and password (Note: they are case
sensitive).
- Unfortunately, this fails often, and you may have to try repeatedly.
- Once you're connected, click on the Page button (near the top right of
the IE8 window, and select the last item in the pull-down menu: Open FTP
site in Windows Explorer.
- Once that window opens successfully, you can upload files to the website
by using drag and drop (or copy and paste).
- The best thing to do is to upload a whole folder of jpg files, rather
than individual files.
- This process gets the files up to the website, but does not link them
in. The webmaster will do that.
- Send email to
webmaster@rangerfootballfans.org to notify the webmaster that the files
are there.
If any of this doesn't make sense, or if you have any
trouble with it, send email to the webmaster, who will be happy to help.
