Game 7: Marshall (or Hightower or Elkins)

Varsity

Saturday, Nov 1:  The Clements Rangers Varsity football team lost a hard-fought and close game against Marshall, 18-21.  Marshall scored a touchdown early in the 1st quarter, and the Rangers trailed from then on, but never gave up.  A field goal by Brian Coffman early in the 2nd quarter made it 3-7, and that was the score going into halftime.

Marshall scored once in the 3rd quarter, making it 3-13.  With a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Rangers scored on an Omar Amin 7-yard run, and Brett Dunn's PAT made it 10-13.  Marshall scored again with 3:42 left in the game, and got the 2-point conversion, making it 10-21.

Some teams might have given up hope, but a 49-yard pass from Austin Decell to Tyler Kruse set up a 21-yard touchdown run by Brett Dunn.  The Rangers then made a 2-point conversion on a Decell-to-Jesse Cummins pass , making the score 18-21 with 3:22 left.  A tricky on-sides kick by the Rangers was recovered by Marshall, but the Rangers were able to hold them and force them to punt.   Finally, deep in their own territory with less than two minutes to go, the Rangers tried valiantly but were unable to move the ball, and Marshall ran out the clock.

The Clements J.V. White team dropped their first game of the year against a much-improved Elkins team.  After going down 8-0 in the 1st quarter the Rangers were finally able to answer with a big touchdown strike from Mike Seitz to Ross Stifflemire leaving the Rangers trailing 8-7 at half.  Elkins added another touchdown in the 3rd quarter which put the Rangers down 14-7.  Late in the 4th quarter the Rangers launched one last furious drive down the length of the field.  On the drive Mike Seitz completed two long passes to Ross Stifflemire one of which was a miraculous “crawling catch” off of a pass deflection, and one 11 yard pass to Amanjyot Munday to secure a big first down.  The Rangers were able to drive into the Knights’ redzone before unfortunately being turned away on a fourth down attempt.  “Superstar” Brad Fontana had a great game on defense coming up with several big pass defenses and tackles on the night, and Steven “Perry” Mason made several nice open field tackles from his safety spot.  Eric Nguyen had an interception right before the half, Jordan Nussbaum had several nice solo stops, and Umair Karowadia added a sack.  Despite the loss the coaches were very proud of the effort and intensity that the team displayed.

The Rangers received the opening kickoff and Jacolby Berry broke a run of 75 yds to score and Dan Debord’s PAT was good to take a 7 – 0 lead.  The defense stoped the Buffalos and the offense took the ball and had positive runs by Max Melvan and a pass caught by Mark Hibler to keep a drive going.  Max topped of a good drive and scored from 4 yds out and the PAT by Dan Debord was good.  Rangers 14 – Marshall 0.  GR Hinsley had a 30 yd interception return but the offense didn’t capitalize.  With 1 second left before half, Keith Hamren attempted a 42 yd field goal that had plenty of leg but was wide left.  The defense played well all game with the speedy offense of Marshall.  DeJuan Arrington had a key defensive play on a long pass and the defensive line keep the pressure on the Marshall QB.  On a 3rd and 8, Mike Fredebolling hit Sean Massingill to get a first down and a few plays later, Jacolby Berry broke a long run for another Ranger touchdown.  The PAT was good.  Marshall did score twice on long pass plays, but the Rangers were able to hang onto the victory 21 – 12.
