Game 4: Travis, September 24, 2009

Varsity

Thursday, September 24:

After giving up an early touchdown, the Rangers scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first half (Austin Decell to Scott Garcia 40-yard pass, Ray Oppman 12-yard run, and Jerrod Johnson 3-yard run) and went into halftime with a 20-6 lead.  On the first snap in the second half, Ranger running back Jerrod Johnson scored on a 64-yard run, and Brett Dunn kicked the extra point, putting the Rangers up 27-6.  Travis replied with another touchdown a few minutes later, and the Rangers came back with a Brett Dunn field goal early in the fourth quarter, making the score 30-13.  But as they had in their previous two games, the Travis Tigers showed a lot of heart and rallied---they scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, making the score 30-27 with 4:43 remaining in the game.  The Rangers were then unable to score and had to punt.  With only 45 seconds remaining in the game, the Travis quarterback threw a long pass from about the Travis 30-yard line along the left sideline, and Rangers defensive back Scott Garcia intercepted it, ending the Travis rally, causing bedlam in the stands, and allowing the Rangers to run out the clock for the 4th victory of the season!

JV

Wednesday, Sept 23: The JV blue team lost to Travis Wednesday night 34-6.

Charlie Carroll returned from injury this week and scored the Rangers’ lone touchdown of the night early in the 2nd quarter.  The Rangers are looking to bounce back next week against Dulles.

Wednesday, Sept 23: The JV white team lost to Travis Wednesday night 16-8.

The JV White team suffered a hard-fought defeat at the paws of the Travis Tigers 16-8. After a “rush” of early offense by both teams, the defenses stiffened to make the game a defensive struggle. Solid efforts by Mitchell Azam, Danny Perez, and Alhaje Dumbuye led the Ranger offense while great team effort put up the fight on defense. Even though the Rangers dropped to 1-2 on the year, there were many positives to build from for the future.

Freshman Blue Team vs. Travis Tigers

The Clements Rangers were home Wednesday night as they battled the Travis Tigers at Kempner Stadium.  The Rangers would prevail in a highly contested slugfest.   Ryan Riley helped the Rangers jump out to an early lead with a 50 yard interception return to the Tiger 10 yard line.  Demarcus Cobb’s touchdown run two plays later would give the Rangers the early lead.  The two sides struggled in a field position battle for the majority of the second quarter.  The Tiger quarterback provided his team with a touchdown as the half came to a close.  The Ranger defense would provide a big stand the Tiger two point conversion.  Halftime score: Clements 7 – Travis 6.  The Tigers would add their second touchdown of the night on the opening drive of the third quarter.  Unknown at the time, the Ranger’s second stand on the two point conversion would prove to be the difference.  Trevor Moore helped set up a Connor Murphy field goal with his long kickoff return inside Tiger territory. At the start of the final quarter Travis led the Rangers 12-10.  On the first two possessions of the fourth quarter the two teams traded punts.  The Rangers would capitalize on the second Tiger turnover of the night as Michael Henderson recovered a fumble inside Tiger territory.  With a little over a minute left in the game, Connor Murphy would add his second big field goal of the game, giving the Rangers a 13-12 lead.  The Ranger defense held tight as the Tigers desperately tried to move the ball inside the final minute.  Jaime Richards knocked down the final Tiger pass of the game.  Other standouts for the Rangers were Jack Grover, Troy Skisak and John King.  The Rangers look to continue their perfect district record as they travel to Dulles next Thursday night.

Wednesday, Sept 23: The Freshman White team beat Travis 13-12 !

Clements White vs Ft. Bend Travis

The Clements White team was down to Travis 12-0 before we even realized we started the game.  The defense settled in and then shut out the Travis team from the 2nd quarter until the end of the game.  While it took the offense 4 quarters to get it done, they did so by barely winning 13-12.  The game came down to the defense making a stop to win it.  With time running out and the opponents in scoring position, our defense made back to back sacks to force Travis to give up the football and lose the game.

First quarter score was             0-12

Second Quarter                        6-12

Third Quarter Score                 13-12

Fourth Quarter Score               13-12
