JV Rangers (white) vs La Porte, August 25 2011
The JV Rangers (white) earned a victory vs. La Porte through solid
defense and by capitalizing on key turnovers. La Porte struck first after a
poor snap on a punt attempt left the Rangers backed up deep in their own
territory, resulting in the Bulldogs taking a 6-0 lead. After that the
Rangers put together a long drive led by Bryan Wynne (14) who completed 3
out of 4 pass attempts, including a key reception on 4th and 5 by
Austin Williams (35). After a 4 yard run to the verge of the goal line by
Sean Thompson (34), Bryan scored on a QB sneak. Sean then ran for the
two-point conversion, giving the Rangers an 8-6 lead.
In the second quarter the defense dominated. #47 got things started
with a tackle for a loss and a sack on consecutive plays, forcing La Porte
to punt. On La Porte’s next possession Ryan Davis (87) recovered a fumble,
leading to a 4-yard touchdown run by Christian Okopoku (28). Christian then
ran for another two-point conversion, making the score 16-6. On their next
drive LaPorte broke free for a long run. It looked like a sure TD, but
safety Mason Hanzo (11) made a fingertip tackle at the 5 yard line. The
defense held for 3 plays, but La Porte was finally able to score on 4th
down, making it 16-12 Rangers.
In the 3rd quarter Mason again went to work,
intercepting a pass and returning it for a TD, extending the lead to 22-12.
Both teams traded series, but neither could get anything going until the
fourth quarter when good defensive pressure enabled Matthew Newsome (15) to
come up with an interception. Once again Christian was able to punch it in
on a 1 yard run. Final score: Clements 28, LaPorte 12.
